#13 New Providence – an unplanned stop to fix our depth sounder

We planned to sail directly from the Berries to the Exumas and started our sail in the night, knowing that it would be a bit uncomfortable with wind and waves. After realizing that our depth sounder had stopped functioning just before heading to the shallow waters of the Exuma Bank, we decided to make a stop in New Providence (~55nm from the Berries), the island where the Bahamian capital Nassau is also located. We stayed there for about a week, in a pretty rolly but well protected anchorage, sorting the depth sounder, enjoying beach-time with some fellow cruisers and going for a last serious provisioning-round to a “normal” grocery store. We were lucky enough to have a spare depth sounder on board that we could install. The splash it makes when exchanging the depth sounder never gets boring. This maneuver involves screwing out the old one, exposing a big splashy hole in the hull, until you screw the new one in. Julia watched us do the exchange and looked at us in shock with big eyes, mumbling “that was funny”… Clearly, she understood the threat of a big hole in the boat.
