#22 Sailing from the Bahamas to Jamaica

Our sail to Jamaica took us four days and was quite challenging at the beginning. We aimed for a weather window from Great Inagua to Jamaica, but first had to make our way East to Great Inagua. This wasn’t very comfortable, but ok – going East in the Caribbean is never much fun. We anchored in Great Inagua for a few hours to take a little break and continued on through the windward passage between Haiti and Cuba. From then on, the sail was more comfortable and more in synch with wind and waves. When we saw Cuba on our starboard side, we put on the music from Buena Vista Social Club and explained to our kids that we would only be able to wave at Cuba, but weren’t going to stop. All in all, the sail went well, but we broke a part of our mainsail traveler that we would have to try and fix in Jamaica. I also remember being a bit anxious already if we would be able to catch a good weather window from Jamaica to Panama, as hurricane season was quickly approaching (starting in June) and we couldn’t be too picky about windows anymore.

Once we arrived in Jamaica, we pulled into Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio. It was amazing to see how lush and green the island was in comparison to the Bahamas. Our eyes had to adapt to see so many bright green colors all of a sudden. We were welcomed at our boat by Immigration and Customs and had a smooth clearing-in process.
